Simple Ways to Help Members Get More from Their Preventive and Supplemental Benefits
April 29, 2026
Taking a moment to help clients better understand and use their benefits can reinforce the value of their plan throughout the year. This is especially true for preventive care and supplemental benefits — highlighting them can help members stay healthy, engaged and confident in their plan.
Keeping Preventive Care Top of Mind
Preventive care is an important part of a member’s coverage, but it can be easy for them to overlook. A quick mention during a check-in or when answering a question is a simple way to remind clients that their Annual Wellness Visit, preventive screenings and vaccinations are included in their plan.
For example, when speaking with a client, you might add, “By the way, have you scheduled your Annual Wellness Visit yet? That’s covered at no cost.” You can also take the opportunity to highlight covered screenings like mammograms and colonoscopies, along with recommended vaccinations such as flu shots. These small touchpoints can help clients stay proactive with their health and prevent or catch potential issues earlier, when they’re easier to treat.
Reinforcing How Supplemental Benefits Work
Supplemental benefits are another area where a quick explanation or reminder can make a big difference. Many clients aren’t fully aware of how or when to use these benefits without a little extra guidance. For example, during an early-year check-in or follow-up, you might mention, “You have OTC dollars to use each quarter,” and walk them through how to place an order.
You can also explain how to use their flexible benefit card and what it covers, or encourage them to explore the fitness and wellness programs available through their plan.
Or when reconnecting ahead of AEP, a simple question like, “Have you been able to use your extra benefits this year?” can open the door to a helpful conversation about getting the most from their plan.
Turning Small Moments Into Lasting Value
You can reinforce preventive and supplemental benefits in the conversations you’re already having with your clients. Those small moments of guidance can shift how clients see their coverage. When members understand and use their benefits, they’re more likely to feel satisfied and confident in their plan choice — and more likely to renew.
