Understanding Your Dental Coverage: What’s Included and When Extra Coverage Helps

Dental benefits weren’t always a standard part of Medicare Advantage (MA) plans, but that’s changed. Today, most MA plans include dental coverage because members value it and use it. That’s why most of our MA plans include preventive and comprehensive dental benefits right from the start — plus optional supplemental dental plans are available on some plans if you want even more coverage.
Here’s a simple breakdown to help you understand what’s covered and whether adding supplemental dental coverage might make sense for you.
Please note: The benefit information below applies to 2026 plans. New coverage, coinsurance and maximums will be updated in the 2027 plan documents on October 15, 2026, found on our website.
What dental coverage is included with your health plan?
All of our MA plans include preventive and diagnostic dental services at no extra cost. These are the routine services that help keep your mouth healthy, such as:
- Oral exams
- Cleanings
- X rays
Most plans also have basic comprehensive dental coverage.1 This includes services like:
- Fillings1
- Tooth extractions1
Some plans include even more comprehensive coverage, such as:
- Root canals (endodontics)1
- Gum treatments (periodontics)1
What are supplemental dental options?2
If you expect to need more extensive dental care, you can choose to add one of our optional supplemental dental plans for an additional premium: Dental Silver or Dental Gold.2 Premium amounts vary by plan; please consult the corresponding plan Evidence of Coverage (EOC) in Chapter 4 to see the premium amount. These dental options provide a higher annual benefit and improved coverage for more services.
Please note that these options are not available for some plans.
Dental Silver
- Increases your annual dental benefit maximum
- Improves coverage for restorative services
- Covers endodontic, periodontic and oral surgery services
Dental Gold
- Includes everything in Dental Silver
- Adds coverage for crowns, bridges and dentures
- Increases your annual dental benefit maximum
When can you enroll in a supplemental dental plan?
You can enroll in Dental Silver or Dental Gold:
- When you first join Trinity Health Plan New York, or
- During the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), which runs from October 15 to December 7 each year
Is supplemental dental coverage right for you?
If you mainly need routine cleanings, exams and occasional fillings, your plan already provides solid dental coverage.
If you think you may need major dental work, such as crowns, bridges or dentures, a supplemental dental plan may help reduce your out of pocket costs and give you extra peace of mind.
